The New Face of State Senior High School 2 in Jayapura City, the Work of a Native Papuan

Jayapura, Papua, October 19, 2026 — Standing firmly overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean, State Senior High School 2 in Jayapura City is now preparing to welcome a new face. Through the 2026 Educational Unit Revitalization Program, the school is currently constructing a new building with a total budget of over Rp2 billion.

The condition of the school building, which is approximately 40 years old, presents a unique challenge. The Acting Principal of SMAN 2 Jayapura, Lea Ansanay, revealed that the revitalization assistance was originally planned for the rehabilitation of seven classrooms. However, after recalculation, the budget allocation could provide broader improvements, including the construction of three new classrooms, the rehabilitation of four classrooms, and the expansion of the second floor for three classrooms.

"We, the extended family of SMA Negeri 2 Jayapura, would like to express our gratitude to President Prabowo, the Minister and his staff, and the Papua Provincial and Jayapura City Governments. We hope this development will be a valuable opportunity for the entire school community to improve facilities and improve the quality of education," he said.

Community involvement is also a source of pride for the school. Lea explained that the self-management program involved numerous workers, most of whom were native Papuans. In fact, a disabled worker with a speech impairment contributed to the school's construction.

Furthermore, the revitalization program has also brought tangible changes to the students of SMP YPK Sion Dok VIII Jayapura. Since its founding on October 31, 1991, the school finally received revitalization assistance in 2026 with a total budget of over Rp1.1 billion. The principal of SMP YPK Sion Dok VIII Jayapura, Sonya N. Rumanasen, stated that the revitalization assistance was 100 percent complete during the work period from May to August 2026.

By optimizing the self-management scheme, Sonya said her school received a menu of improvements, including an administration/teacher's room, a principal's office, a science laboratory, and one classroom. During the construction process, she identified an opportunity to add more classroom improvements. As a result, the number of classrooms increased from one to four.

"The changes to our school have also received a positive response from the community and church congregation. We hope the now more organized building will increase trust and encourage more parents to send their children to school here," said Sonya.

The impact of the revitalization is also evident in the increased enthusiasm of students for learning. This was conveyed by Roby Aikarem May, a ninth-grade student at SMP YPK Sion Dok VIII Jayapura. Roby recalled the rather concerning condition of his school before the revitalization. Several ceilings were damaged, the zinc roof leaked, often allowing rainwater to enter the classrooms, and many of the tables and chairs were no longer fit for use.

Now, after the revitalization is complete, the school's condition is much improved. The ceilings have been repaired and replaced, and the school's tiles are new, making classrooms more comfortable, supporting teaching and learning activities and fostering greater enthusiasm for learning.

"I hope the students who will attend school here won't scribble on the walls or damage the items provided. Let's take care of it and use it together so everyone can enjoy this facility," Roby explained.

At the end of his story, Roby expressed his gratitude to the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, and the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen), Abdul Mu'ti, for the revitalization assistance that had been given to his school.

"Thank you to President Prabowo Subianto and Mr. Abdul Mu'ti for the revitalization assistance they provided. Now our school is better and not as damaged as before. We can learn more comfortably, with more enthusiasm, and a sense of belonging," said Roby.

Through the Education Unit Revitalization program, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education stated that the government continues to strive to create a suitable and safe learning environment for all students. "I see that the revitalization in Jayapura is progressing well, with some schools even completing construction. We hope that these improvements to school facilities and infrastructure will not only strengthen the quality of educational services but also foster a passion for learning, self-confidence, and hope for a better future for Papua's young generation," the Minister stated in Jayapura on Monday (19/10).

In total, 214 educational institutions in Papua Province have signed Cooperation Agreements (PKS) for the 2026 revitalization program, with a total budget of over Rp208 billion. As of October 2026, 36 educational institutions (13 early childhood education centers and 23 junior high schools) had completed construction with 100 percent progress. This program also reached 2,821 local workers.

In Jayapura City alone, 47 educational institutions have implemented PKS with a total budget of over IDR 41 billion. Eight schools (5 early childhood education centers and 3 junior high schools) have completed construction and employed 535 local workers. *** (Author: Destian/Photographer: Irfan/Editors: Stephanie, Seno)
