Yogyakarta, October 16, 2026 - The sound of the angklung floated amidst the cheerful cheer of the children at IT Mekar Insani Kindergarten. They enthusiastically played the song "Padhang Bulan." Behind this traditional musical performance, there are important lessons: the children learn to listen, be patient, cooperate, and give opportunities to their friends.
Among the students were two siblings, Bintang and Bulan, who attend IT Mekar Insani Kindergarten. They seemed engrossed in playing the angklung. They were both entrusted with playing the angklung with the note "si" and showed enthusiasm when it was their turn to play it. "I'm so happy," said Bintang, and Bulan agreed.
For TK IT Mekar Insani, angklung is not just a means of introducing traditional Indonesian music. This activity also serves as a fun learning environment for character development and fostering harmony with friends. This aligns with the spirit of character building promoted by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen).
The principal of IT Mekar Insani Kindergarten, Zenny Savitri, explained that playing the angklung is an extracurricular activity that fosters children's interests and talents in the arts. Every Thursday, the children practice angklung with instructor Achmad Miftahur Rochim.
"Through the angklung, children learn collaboration and discipline, while also practicing patience. They must wait their turn according to the notes played. From this simple habit, we hope to foster a positive attitude that will carry over into their daily lives," said Zenny on Thursday (October 15).
Achmad explained that each child plays a role in shaping a song. No single child can create harmony alone. They need to pay attention to the cues, control the urge to keep playing their instruments, and listen to their peers.
Learning is conducted through games, hand signals, and guidance tailored to each child's individual abilities. Children who lack confidence are encouraged to try without fear of making mistakes.
"Angklung teaches that beauty isn't created by one great person, but by many people willing to listen to each other. Our job isn't just to produce talented children who play music, but to help them learn to embrace their differences," said Achmad.
This experience demonstrates that enjoyable learning can be a gateway to instilling the value of harmony from an early age. When children learn to wait their turn, respect the role of their peers, and harmonize sounds, they are actually practicing living together.
From each bamboo quiver, children learn that differences are not barriers to creating something beautiful. In fact, when everyone respects and participates, a harmonious, shared value is created that is important for children to carry from the classroom into their daily lives.*** (Author: Denty / Editor: Destya, Seno / Photographer: Ikram)
