Jakarta, August 27, 2026 — The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen), Abdul Mu'ti, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) and the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI), and handed over the Kemendikdasmen archives, including the text of the Mendikdasmen's national statement at the 43rd UNESCO General Assembly. This step is part of an effort to strengthen the management and utilization of archives as a source of information, learning, culture, and national history.
The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education stated that archives play a crucial role in bringing to life various events that are part of the nation's history. "This, in my opinion, is part of how archives become living documents. They are not just piles of paper, but living documents that enrich the nation and enable it to prosper," he said in Jakarta on Thursday (August 27).
According to him, past documents can serve as historical and intellectual capital for the nation, enabling it to understand its past journey and to look to the future with greater optimism. "Representing documents in a relatively authentic form is meaningful in the context of our learning," he said.
One of the documents presented on the occasion was the text of the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education's national statement at the UNESCO General Assembly. Minister Mu'ti described the document as part of the national archives and a historical record of Indonesia's journey, including the journey of the Indonesian language on the global stage.
"Everything is part of our nation's history, a significant milestone not only for us as Indonesians but also for global civilization. By becoming an official language of UNESCO, Indonesian has made a significant contribution to building the world's literary heritage and civilization," he said.
Archives Don't Stop as Documents
The Head of ANRI, Mego Pinandito, said that the synergy with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is not only related to improving archival governance, starting from saving, preserving, to protecting archives, but also their wider utilization.
Mego also expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education for its archival management. Based on the results of the 2025 archival oversight, the Ministry received a score of 98.14, categorized as very satisfactory. Meanwhile, the level of archive digitization reached 98.09, also categorized as very satisfactory.
"So, with this model, we always hope that ministries and institutions can at least be on par with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education," he said.
Beyond simply fulfilling its accountability function, Mego encourages the use of archives handed over and preserved at ANRI as a source of knowledge. "The archives handed over and preserved at ANRI are not only evidence of accountability, but we continue to encourage them to become an important source of information, education, culture, and history, a truly rich one," Mego stated.
The series of activities also included the handover of the Ministry of Education and Culture's static archives to ANRI, a discussion forum, and the signing of a cooperation agreement on the use of static archives in learning and the preparation of educational books.*** (Author: Stephanie/Photographer: Rayhan)
