Jakarta, August 14, 2026 — President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, announced several government measures in the education sector at the 2026 Annual Session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Regional Representative Council (DPD) in Jakarta on Friday (August 14). These measures include accelerating school renovations, utilizing technology in learning, and expanding access to education for Indonesian children.
The President emphasized that all Indonesian children must receive a good education. Therefore, the government is currently implementing the largest school improvement program in history through the Revitalization of Education Units.
"Last year, it was 17,000; this year, it's over 71,000. Next year, our target is 100,000; and by 2028, 100,000. By 2029, all schools in Indonesia—elementary, junior high, senior high, and vocational high schools, including Islamic boarding schools—must be renovated. Even on the outermost, most remote island, Miangas Island, we have renovated schools in Miangas," said the President.
Regarding the digitalization of learning, the President stated that the government has distributed Interactive Flat Panels (IFPs) or Interactive Digital Boards (PIDs) to schools across Indonesia. "Last year, we successfully distributed one screen per school. On December 31, we will distribute three additional screens per school. This means that every school in Indonesia will have four classrooms equipped with interactive smart screens," the President added.
According to President Prabowo, the use of this technology will provide teachers and students with broader access to the curriculum and learning content. Learning materials can also be accessed again when needed, even from home.
The President also emphasized the importance of foreign language proficiency as part of improving the quality of education. Foreign language instruction will begin at the elementary school level, including for first-grade students.
"Our children must have access to the best education so that when they enter the workforce, they will have greater skills. They will be accepted everywhere, and they can work with any organization," the President continued.
Furthermore, in the presentation of the 2027 Draft State Budget (RAPBN) and Financial Note, the President also stated that education is one of the eight clusters of the National Priority Work Program (PKPN). These eight clusters include food sovereignty; energy and water independence; education; health; downstreaming and industrialization; infrastructure, housing, and disaster resilience; people's and village economy; and poverty reduction.
On that occasion, the President outlined several major steps that will be the next stage of Indonesia's transformation. One of these is the renovation of damaged schools.
"We will complete the renovation of all schools in need by 2029. I believe the state is obligated to ensure that every schoolchild learns in a safe and dignified school. Schools are where Indonesian children build their future," President Prabowo emphasized.
The President stated that some children are still studying in classrooms with unsuitable conditions, such as leaking roofs, cracked walls, broken toilets, and unsafe classrooms. He stated that these conditions must not be allowed to continue and must be addressed immediately.
"We must have the courage to set high targets. There must be no more stories of schools collapsing. There must be no more damaged classrooms left to deteriorate for years. All schools must be in good condition, safe, clean, and suitable for learning," he said.
In addition to school renovations, the government will also equip all classrooms with interactive smart screens (IFPs) to support the learning process. Distance learning via broadcast will also be developed so that top teachers can teach from teacher studios in Jakarta and provincial capitals, accessible to schools across Indonesia.
"We must make a leap in education. The government will also fight for all public schools to be free of charge. This is the ideal of our nation's founders. Education is the right of all Indonesian children," the President concluded.*** (Author: Stephanie/Documentation: Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Team)
