Padang, July 5, 2026 – For Pepi Mulyasari, enrolling her son in SLBN 1 Padang is more than just completing an administrative task. Behind the process lies the hope that her son, who has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), will receive educational services tailored to his needs. Concerns about stigma initially made her hesitant, but the school's open service and support changed her mind.
"We felt very cared for. Everything was explained in detail and without any rush. My hope is simple: my child can learn comfortably and receive appropriate services so he can explore his abilities and develop according to his interests and talents. I will care for the special qualities entrusted to him until he achieves his future," said Pepi.
Pepi's experience illustrates the implementation of the Friendly New Student Admissions System (SPMB) in West Sumatra. Not only did she experience this, but other parents at SLBN 1 Padang, SMAN 12 Padang, and SMKN 6 Padang also experienced excellent service when enrolling their children.
West Sumatra Province has implemented a new student admission process that prioritizes transparent, accountable, and inclusive services so that every prospective student has equal opportunities.
As with the SPMB held at SMKN 6 Padang, the committee ensures that all registration information is openly accessible to the public while also providing assistance to prospective students who still need guidance in choosing a concentration of expertise.
"In terms of administrative procedures, the SPMB implementation at SMKN 6 Padang went smoothly. The school strives to provide services that can help parents and prospective students. However, our homework is to guide prospective students because many prospective students are confused about choosing one of the two concentrations of expertise they wrote on the registration form," said SMKN 6 Padang teacher and SPMB committee member, Annisa Fitria.
Zahran Ai Syerky, a prospective student at SMAN 12 Padang, also experienced transparent service. He said the clear information made the registration process more relaxed. "The information was comprehensive and easy to understand. If anything wasn't clear, the teachers immediately helped explain it. So, we felt more at ease during the registration process. The only obstacle was the long lines due to the large number of prospective students registering, but otherwise, everything went smoothly and safely," he said.
The Director General of Secondary and Special Education, Tatang Muttaqin, emphasized that public trust in SPMB is built through good service, open communication, and proper selection. "SPMB is the gateway to educational services. Therefore, all educational institutions must ensure the admission process is open, clear, and inclusive. The implementation of SPMB Ramah is not only a process for accepting new students, but also the first gateway to a positive experience for students and their parents, to receive a quality education," Tatang emphasized.
The good practices demonstrated by schools in Padang City demonstrate that the SPMB is more than just a selection process. When information is communicated openly, services are provided without discrimination, and each family is supported according to their needs, the SPMB becomes the beginning of growing public trust in fair, accountable, and quality educational services.*** (Author & Documentation: Setditjen Dikmen Diksus Team)
