Portraits of Schools in Aceh Tamiang Recovering Learning Using Emergency Tents

Aceh Tamiang Regency, Aceh, Ministry of Education and Culture - Although learning activities at most schools in Aceh Tamiang Regency have gradually returned to normal, several are struggling to restore learning. One such school is Babo Public Elementary School in Aceh Tamiang Regency. Classes at this school actually began on December 25, 2025. However, the school's condition has not fully recovered, forcing students to continue learning in emergency tents.

The flood caused significant damage to school facilities. Several rooms, including classrooms, the principal's office, and the auditorium, were completely destroyed, while the computer room and library were severely damaged. Furthermore, the toilets, schoolyard, and school gate were also affected by floodwater and mud.

"In addition to the buildings, many learning resources, such as laptops, teaching aids, sports equipment, and art materials, were damaged and unusable. Almost everything was destroyed by the flood," said Ahmad, the principal of Babo Elementary School.

Despite these conditions, SDN Babo continues to strive to continue providing educational services by utilizing emergency tents as temporary classrooms. In practice, one tent is divided into two classrooms to serve all grade levels.

"We organize learning from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. WIB, focusing on core subjects like mathematics, Indonesian, and science. We also receive support from volunteers who provide mentoring and trauma healing for students," he explained.

Babo Elementary School has received various forms of assistance from various sources, including emergency tents, uniforms and school bags for students, learning supplies, and support for learning facilities. This assistance will be used to support the continuity of the teaching and learning process during the emergency response period.

Ahmad stated that the assistance received was very helpful for the school in maintaining learning activities. "We have fully utilized the assistance we received from various parties to support the children's learning activities during this emergency," he said.

Currently, SDN Babo serves 156 students, supported by eight teachers and two administrative staff. The entire school community continues to collaborate to maintain students' enthusiasm for learning and create a safe and conducive learning environment despite limited facilities.

"We continue our efforts to restore the post-disaster situation by coordinating with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) to encourage students through exercise and ceremonies. We hope the visit to the emergency tents can be carried out, as the children are still waiting for support and attention," said Ahmad.

During the recovery period, the school still needs continued support, particularly regarding the provision of relocated classrooms so that learning can resume normally in the permanent building. "We hope to be relocated to suitable classrooms soon so that the learning process can proceed more optimally," Ahmad concluded.* (Author: Ikke, Intan || Editor: Denty A.)
