The Ministry of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Indonesian House of Representatives Strengthen Character Education Through the Youth Public Relations Movement in the Digital Era

Tasikmalaya, October 24, 2025 – Amidst the rapid flow of digital information, the Ministry of Elementary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) through the Bureau of Communication and Public Relations (BKHM) together with Member of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Ferdiansyah, is promoting a new face of school communication through the Young Public Relations movement.   This movement not only trains publication and social media skills, but also raises awareness that every student can be an agent of positive digital culture who spreads positive values, ethics and enthusiasm in cyberspace.

This message emerged at a workshop themed "The Role of Young Public Relations Officers as Agents of Positive Digital Culture for Quality and Character-Building Education" in Tasikmalaya. The event was attended by 200 participants, consisting of students, teachers, and parents from various schools in Tasikmalaya City and Regency.

"Young PR officers are not just school social media administrators, but also role models for their peers, bridges of communication between the school and the community, and maintainers of online ethics. This crucial role requires the younger generation to possess not only technical skills but also strong character and a deep understanding of responsibility in the digital world," Anang said at the opening of the workshop on Sunday (October 19).

On the same occasion, Anang reminded the students of the importance of the Seven Habits of Great Indonesian Children (7 KAIH), namely waking up early, praying, exercising, eating healthily and nutritiously, loving to learn, being social and sleeping on time as the basis for character formation that needs to be made a habit in the students' lives.   He also advised students to be careful when using social media, because one irresponsible click could have fatal consequences for themselves and others.

This workshop, part of a series of previous youth public relations outreach activities in Garut, also served as a platform for students to become ethical digital literacy agents in educational settings. Anang emphasized that in an era of open information, the younger generation needs to be equipped with polite communication skills and character to become role models in the digital space.

On the same occasion, Ferdiansyah emphasized that digital literacy is a crucial part of building national character amidst the rapid flow of technology. He emphasized that technology must be used as a means to improve the quality of education and develop a generation of integrity.

Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2024 demonstrates the Tasikmalaya region's strong commitment to education. Tasikmalaya City recorded an average length of schooling of 9.63 years, with a target of 13.50 years, exceeding the national average of 8.85 years and 13.21 years.   Meanwhile, Tasikmalaya Regency    continues to pursue an average length of schooling of 7.97 years and an expected length of schooling of 12.64 years. These figures indicate that Tasikmalaya has a strong foundation for   giving birth to a smart and characterful digital generation.

Ferdinand   explained that young public relations have five main roles, namely disseminating positive and educational information, agents for building the digital reputation of educational institutions, facilitators of digital literacy, maintaining the balance of cultural values and character, and as a communication bridge between schools, communities and parents.

This activity also presents   Representative of the Ministry of Education and Culture's Character Strengthening Center, Puput Mutiara, and the 2025 High School Ambassador for the Informative Category, Tazanna Neisha Batuwael, who shared good practices on how to use social media wisely and how to share positive content.

The participants' enthusiasm was evident throughout the event. Erlangga Langit Ramadhan, a student at Tasikmalaya State Senior High School 6, said he gained many new insights into responsible social media usage. "This event was very memorable because I learned how to use social media for positive things and started building a strong personal brand. In the future, I want to use Instagram to showcase my beneficial activities," he said enthusiastically.

Meanwhile, Tanti Damayanti, a teacher at SMP Negeri 3 Tasikmalaya, said the workshop opened the eyes of educators and students to the importance of digital ethics. "This activity provides children with the tools to use social media wisely and with character. We, the teachers, are also motivated to continue educating them so they can become agents of digital culture in the future," she said. *** (Author: Rona Uly / Editor: Denty A., Seno H. / Documentation: BKHM)
