STEM Learning at SNT 3 OIKN Invites Students to Create Greening Solutions through Vertical Gardens

Nusantara, Ministry of Education and Culture — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning practices encourage students to find solutions to real-world problems in their environment. This approach is being implemented by SNT 3 OIKN through the Smart Irrigation through Vertical Garden (IPVG) innovation, which encourages students to develop greening solutions amidst limited school space.

Through this project, students from SNT 3 OIKN combined knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a hands-on process within the school environment. These activities included water management, plant growth monitoring, technology utilization, and data processing.

"Smart Irrigation through Vertical Gardens is an innovative land use initiative for SNT 3 OIKN, which lacks a large plot of land. Smart Irrigation through Vertical Gardens is equipped with a more organized and efficient irrigation system," said Fatimatus Zuhra, Head of SNT 3 OIKN.

He further explained that the initial phase of the activity focused on concept introduction, environmental needs identification, and vertical garden design. The innovation was then developed through assembly, planting, irrigation, growth monitoring, data processing, and harvest utilization.

"In this process, students learn to identify problems, design solutions, conduct observations, analyze data, collaborate, and reflect on the results of their activities. This experience allows students to see firsthand how the knowledge they've learned can be applied to address issues in their environment," he said.

Schools see STEM as an approach that can support in-depth learning because students not only understand concepts, but also apply them in real-life situations.

Zuhra also explained that STEM learning includes the Engineering Design Process (EDP). "Through the EDP, students gain experience identifying problems, designing solutions, carrying out assembly and testing processes, and reviewing the results," he said.

The STEM learning practices through IPVG are in line with the National STEM program of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) which encourages STEM learning through the 5M principles, namely Easy, Affordable, Enjoyable, Mindful , and Meaningful . Through this approach, STEM learning is expected to be present through experiences close to students' lives, utilizing available resources, and encouraging students to dare to try and create solutions.*** (Author: Nurlaili / Editor: Denty / Documentation: SNT 3 OIKN)
