SNT 7 Bogor Students Learn to Solve Real-Life Problems Through STEM

Jakarta, Ministry of Education and Culture – From designing a protective container for the Proclamation text to creating a smart border prototype, students at Integrated National School (SNT) 7 Bogor had the opportunity to test their knowledge through real-life problems. These projects were developed through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning, which combines several subjects.

The Head of SNT 7 Bogor, Fitriyani, said that the development of STEM and interdisciplinary learning is part of SNT's uniqueness and an important part in realizing SNT's vision.

"The background to SNT 7 Bogor developing STEM programs and interdisciplinary learning is because this is a unique feature of SNT and is also one of the most important parts of realizing SNT's vision," said Fitriyani in a statement delivered on Monday (September 28).

He said that the program would begin to be implemented after the MPLS and pre-study periods were completed, namely at the start of learning at SNT 7 Bogor in September 2026.

At the junior high school level, one ongoing project is the "Independence Courier Mission," which combines Pancasila, Indonesian, and mathematics education. Students learn about the information the courier brought about news of Indonesian independence and the Proclamation of Independence, while also calculating the amount of material needed to protect the text of the Proclamation from water and pressure during the journey.

Furthermore, Fitriyani explained that the students created a container to protect important texts using mathematical calculations. In this way, history, language, and mathematics learning converged in a single, contextual problem.

Then, at the high school level, there's the "Adaptive Open Space Site Plan " project, which combines science, Indonesian, mathematics, and physical education. Tenth-grade students analyze the urban heat island phenomenon, model data using scatter diagrams, and compile a multimodal report to design adaptive open spaces as part of climate crisis mitigation and physical fitness improvement.

Fitriyani revealed that another project, "Border Technology," combines Pancasila Education, Coding and Artificial Intelligence, Informatics, and Physics. Students learned about the sovereignty of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), the principles of ultrasonic waves, pseudocode creation, and Arduino programming. The result is a sensor-based smart border prototype capable of detecting objects automatically and in real time .

Fitriyani observed that this process also fostered the development of students' skills, particularly in troubleshooting , logical and systematic thinking, and the application of measurements in scientific work. Currently, students at SNT 7 Bogor are still developing ideas for implementing this technology within their educational institutions and the community.

"The visible changes in students after participating in STEM learning, especially theme 4, are increased troubleshooting skills, logical and systematic thinking, and the ability to apply measurement systems in scientific work through design, distance measurement using ultrasonic sensors, accuracy testing, and analysis of factors that influence measurement results in grade X high school students," said Fitriyani.

Furthermore, Fitriyani stated that the STEM approach also makes students more active in the learning process. "In fact, the STEM approach is very effective in making children active, enthusiastic, exploratory, proactive, innovative, and collaborative. Ultimately, the in-depth learning that is expected to be achieved is aligned with the objectives," Fitriyani said.

STEM Connects Disciplines

In addition to STEM, SNT 7 Bogor applies interdisciplinary learning by combining a number of subjects to understand problems more comprehensively.

Fitriyani explained that at the junior high school level, one of her projects was "Together Building Positive Digital," a collaboration between Pancasila Education, Indonesian Language, Informatics, and Artificial Intelligence Coding. Students analyzed digital ethics issues and developed positive campaigns in the form of posters or infographics.

There's also the " Bio Detective: Hidden Biodiversity " theme, which combines science and fine arts. Students become "biology detectives" by utilizing gadgets and artificial intelligence tools like Gemini, Google Lens , and Seek by iNaturalist to observe, identify, and classify biodiversity in the school environment. The results are then processed into digital infographics and exhibited in a gallery walk.

For Fitriyani, STEM, interdisciplinary learning, and immersive learning are closely related. "The relationship between STEM, interdisciplinary learning, and immersive learning is very closely related. We see that through STEM, problems are presented in a contextual (real-world) way, while interdisciplinary learning combines various disciplines to solve problems, and immersive learning occurs when students think critically to create solutions," Fitriyani said.

These various projects are part of SNT 7 Bogor's efforts to provide contextual and meaningful learning. Students not only learn concepts but also use them to analyze problems, test ideas, and create solutions. This process is expected to foster in-depth learning within the SNT environment.*** (Author: Ririn / Editor: Denty / Documentation: SNT 7 Bogor Team)
