Jakarta, September 26, 2026 — The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) continues to revitalize education to support students in a safe and comfortable learning environment. Revitalization is one step towards realizing quality education for all, particularly through improvements to facilities and infrastructure that support the learning process.
This was conveyed by the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen), Abdul Mu'ti, while speaking on a podcast with Tribun Network's News Director, Febi Mahindra Putra. In the podcast, Febi discussed developments in primary and secondary education, particularly regarding educational revitalization, digitalization, and the Academic Ability Test (TKA), on Tribun Network on Friday (September 25).
Abdul Mu'ti explained that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education's vision is to provide quality education for all with universal participation. To achieve this goal, the Ministry is strengthening four aspects: physical infrastructure , pedagogical infrastructure , cultural infrastructure , and legal infrastructure . Revitalization of Educational Units and Digitalization of Learning include strengthening physical infrastructure to support the provision of safe and comfortable learning facilities. "Revitalization and digitalization are not goals, but means to achieve the goal of quality education," he said.
According to Abdul Mu'ti, the condition of educational facilities also impacts the teaching and learning process. Adequate classrooms and infrastructure can make students more comfortable and help teachers deliver lessons more effectively. Therefore, revitalization should not be viewed solely as a physical school development, but as part of an effort to improve the quality of learning and the educational ecosystem.
He stated that the damaged schools were located in various regions with varying degrees of damage, ranging from light, moderate, to severe. The number of schools damaged reached over 200,000. The Ministry of Education and Culture then prioritized schools with severe damage for gradual repairs, taking into account budgetary capacity and other priority education programs.
In 2025, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikbud) revitalized 16,167 schools, reaching a target of 10,669, or 135 percent. Meanwhile, in 2026, the initial revitalization target was 71,744 schools. The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education stated that this number has since increased to around 6,000 schools, although implementation is still awaiting the disbursement of the next phase of additional funding.
Furthermore, to determine which schools will receive revitalization, proposals come from local governments, the aspirations of council members and community leaders, and the community, including information on school conditions provided by content creators. This program targets not only public schools but also private schools. By 2025, 23 percent of revitalization assistance recipients will be private schools. Priorities for 2026 include schools affected by disasters in several regions, schools in the 3T (frontier and remote) regions, and schools with severe damage, including those in urban areas.
The revitalization of educational units is carried out through a self-managed mechanism involving schools in its implementation. In closing, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti stated that this mechanism provides benefits in the form of budget efficiency, more timely implementation, and economic impacts for the surrounding community because labor and materials can be sourced locally. Thus, the revitalization is expected to not only improve the physical condition of schools but also create a more suitable educational environment for students and support teachers in carrying out learning.
