Kebumen, Central Java, October 2, 2026 – Children need an educational environment that is safe, comfortable, and healthy, and supports the development of character and competence. Therefore, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen)'s Educational Unit Revitalization program goes beyond improving facilities and infrastructure, but is also aimed at creating a learning environment that increasingly supports the quality of learning.
This commitment to strengthening the learning environment aligns with the direction of the Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Wamendikdasmen), Fajar Riza Ul Haq. During a working visit to Kebumen, Fajar reminded students that beyond the ongoing improvements to physical facilities, the students' mental and fighting spirit must also be nurtured.
"What's being trained in education isn't just cognitive abilities, but also character and competency. With artificial intelligence now so advanced, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and adaptation skills are crucial," Fajar said while attending an event at Muhammadiyah University of Gombong (UNIMUGO) in Kebumen Regency, Central Java, on Thursday (October 1).
In Kebumen Regency, 61 educational institutions have been revitalized. The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, inaugurated the revitalization efforts on January 26, 2026. The revitalization assistance reached Rp31.85 billion and covered various levels of education: 33 elementary schools (SD), 14 junior high schools (SMP), 5 kindergartens/early childhood education (TK/PAUD), 4 vocational high schools (SMK), and 3 senior high schools (SMA). Non-formal education, such as one learning center (SKB) and one community learning center (PKBM), also received improvements.
Government interventions go beyond building repairs. Several educational units also receive support for other priority programs, such as Free Nutritious Meals (MBG), Interactive Flat Panels ( IFP)/Digital Interactive Boards (PID), and laptops. This step confirms that improvements to the educational environment are being implemented simultaneously with other programs to support student learning.
Deputy Minister Fajar emphasized that improvements to the educational environment must be accompanied by the development of an adaptive learning culture. Students need to be accustomed to continuous learning, developing competencies, and adapting to changes in technology and the workplace. "Become lifelong learners. The workplace will change, so character and competency must be the foundation for continuous adaptation," he urged.
On the same occasion, Kebumen Regent Lilis Nuryani expressed her appreciation for the central government's support in improving the quality of education in the region. She stated that with better classrooms, children in Kebumen, from remote villages to urban areas, can pursue their education more safely and comfortably, enabling them to achieve their dreams. "When the central and regional governments work in unison, efforts to improve the quality of education will be faster and more comprehensive," Lilis said.
He explained that efforts to improve the quality of education are taking place amidst the continuing development of Kebumen's educational achievements. Based on data from the Kebumen Regency Government, the School Participation Rate (APS) for 7–12 year olds reached 99.73 percent, while the APS for 13–15 year olds reached 98.56 percent. In terms of learning, elementary school literacy scores were recorded at 84.28 and numeracy at 73.68, while junior high school literacy reached 87.29. These achievements serve as capital to continue improving the quality of learning while expanding learning opportunities.
Going forward, Lilis hopes that revitalization support can continue to reach educational institutions that still need it. The Kebumen Regency Government continues to strive to ensure that children in various regions have the opportunity to learn in a decent environment and receive quality educational services.
