Surabaya, October 13, 2026 – School supervisors play a crucial role in ensuring that education policies are implemented effectively and have a tangible impact on educational institutions. Therefore, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen), Abdul Mu'ti, encouraged school supervisors to continuously improve their competencies so they can assist teachers and principals in improving the quality of learning and creating a safe and comfortable learning environment for students.
"Supervisors have the task of carrying out educational supervision," said Abdul Mu'ti at the Coordination Meeting of the Indonesian School Supervisors Association (APSI) in Surabaya, East Java, Monday (12/10).
He believes the supervisor's role needs to be supported by clear tasks and competency development to ensure optimal educational supervision. He explained that competency development is crucial for supporting the implementation of various educational policies, including deep learning and the introduction of coding and artificial intelligence (AI). In addition to teachers and principals, supervisors also need training to assist educational units in implementing these policies.
"Therefore, we are trying to achieve this by training teachers and, of course, principals, and eventually, supervisors," he said.
In-depth learning, continued Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti, encourages changes in the learning process so that it focuses not only on transferring knowledge and skills but also on developing students' values and abilities. In this regard, supervisors play a role in supporting schools to ensure that learning is more meaningful and tailored to students' needs.
He also explained that coding and AI are elective subjects introduced from fifth grade in elementary school through secondary education. Teacher and school readiness is crucial, including through competency development and appropriate use of technology. The use of AI also needs to be balanced with critical thinking skills, creativity, communication, collaboration, and an understanding of ethics.
In addition to quality learning, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti emphasized the importance of building a safe and comfortable school culture. Schools need to be spaces for students to learn, grow, and develop their potential without fear. Therefore, preventing bullying and violence and strengthening guidance and counseling services must be a shared concern.
"We want to build those relationships. So, with a safe and comfortable school culture, we want to make schools a home for our children," he said.
On that occasion, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education also reminded that the Academic Ability Test (TKA) does not determine student graduation. TKA results can be used as evaluation material to assess learning outcomes and improve the educational process, while determining graduation remains the responsibility of teachers and educational units, in accordance with applicable regulations.
Supervisors are also expected to ensure the effective implementation of various educational programs in schools, including the use of digital interactive boards and the "Morning Fun" program. The "Morning Fun" program includes the "Great Indonesian Children's Gymnastics" (Gymnastics), singing the national anthem "Indonesia Raya," and praying together as part of positive habits within the school environment.
"Various policies must be implemented, especially those related to quality improvement. School supervisors must be present," the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education emphasized.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education hopes that school supervisors can optimally carry out their supervisory functions and partner with teachers and principals in improving the quality of learning and realizing Quality Education for All.
