Jakarta, September 23, 2026 – Efforts to restore education services following the hydrometeorological disasters that struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra continue to show positive progress. In the process, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) is implementing recovery efforts by adapting the Master Plan for the Acceleration of Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, which aims to achieve Quality Education for All, as well as a concrete manifestation of the education sector's contribution to President Prabowo Subianto's fourth Asta Cita (Goal of the Nation).
Based on data collected through September 2026, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen), Abdul Mu'ti, stated that 4,922 disaster-affected schools in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have all resumed classes. Of this total, 4,821 are returning to their original schools, 99 are learning in Emergency Classrooms (RKD), and two are temporarily relocating to other schools.
"Overall, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education's total support for restoring education services in the three provinces affected by the Sumatran disaster currently reaches Rp5.6 trillion. Of this amount, the largest portion is being allocated for educational unit revitalization assistance, with a total budget of Rp3.03 trillion," the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education stated in Jakarta on Wednesday (September 23).
Regarding the progress of revitalization assistance, Minister Abdul Mu'ti stated that 3,132 schools have signed Cooperation Agreements (PKS) worth Rp3.03 trillion. To date, Rp2.63 trillion has been disbursed to school accounts.
The first phase of funding, amounting to 70 percent, has been disbursed to all recipient schools. Meanwhile, the second phase, amounting to 30 percent, will be disbursed once the physical construction progress reaches at least 50 percent. Currently, 1,267 schools, with a total aid value of Rp 400.5 billion, are still in the process of disbursing the second phase of funding.
In terms of physical construction progress, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education recorded that 562 schools have completed 100 percent of construction. Meanwhile, 1,954 schools have achieved construction progress above 50 percent, and 616 schools are on track to reach 50 percent.
Furthermore, Minister Abdul Mu'ti also highlighted the relocation process for affected schools. He stated that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikbud) has proposed 97 schools for relocation to safer locations. Of these, 34 are already under construction, while 63 others are still awaiting land clearance and legal approval.
In this regard, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian commended the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education's steps and achievements in restoring education services in Sumatra after the disaster. "This achievement by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is proof that the central government is not standing idly by. We are working hard and continuing to collaborate, and the results can be directly felt by the community," explained Minister Tito.
Assistance for School Residents and Provision of Learning Facilities
In addition to focusing on restoring school buildings, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has also distributed assistance to teachers, education personnel, students, and to provide learning resources. Regarding teachers and education personnel, Minister Abdul Mu'ti explained that the Ministry has distributed Rp315.08 billion to 52,513 disaster-affected beneficiaries. Furthermore, disaster preparedness training and psychosocial support have been prepared, reaching 90,962 teachers with a budget of Rp123 billion.
"We are also providing the Smart Indonesia Program (PIP) to more than 1.5 million students in 53 affected regencies/cities, with a budget of IDR 1.16 trillion. We hope the PIP funds can be used for educational purposes and then disbursed in stages to students' accounts," said the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education.
Regarding the provision of learning facilities, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has also prepared IDR 688.8 billion, which includes 206,317 furniture packages, school supplies for 260,358 students, 733 educational game packages, 1,919 sports equipment packages, 515 computer laboratory equipment packages, 259 science laboratory packages, 134 RKD units, and 2.09 million copies of learning books.
For vocational education, a PKS (Partnership Agreement) has been signed for practical equipment assistance worth Rp418.5 billion for 131 vocational high schools (SMK). Furthermore, 71 course and training institutions have received Rp4.18 billion in assistance, and the funds are currently being disbursed by the institutions. Furthermore, Rp17.97 billion in operational recovery funds for 822 schools were disbursed between May and June 2026.
As a continuous acceleration measure, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education will take five steps to improve the recovery of education services in Sumatra after the disaster. First, intensive mentoring for 616 revitalized schools will be provided, while accelerating the distribution of the second phase of revitalization funds. Second, expediting relocation through coordination with local governments and relevant ministries/agencies to ensure land readiness and legality.
Third, oversee the distribution of books, facilities, and equipment to ensure timely, targeted, and accountable distribution. Fourth, collaborate with local governments and relevant ministries/agencies to provide safe access to schools. Finally, build safer schools by strengthening the Disaster-Safe Education Unit (SPAB) program.
