Digital Interactive Whiteboards Make It Easier for Students to Understand Science in the Classroom

East Ogan Komering Ulu, South Sumatra, January 25, 2026 - Science learning in schools has often focused on memorizing formulas rather than understanding processes. Abstract concepts like the kinetic theory of gases, which explains the relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature, are often difficult for students to grasp. Through the use of Digital Interactive Boards (DIBs), learning now moves from mere abstraction to visualization, allowing students to see and understand scientific processes concretely.

This transformation in learning methods is part of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education's (Kemendikdasmen) efforts to improve the quality of education in Indonesia using a deep learning approach through the Learning Digitalization program.

The tangible benefits of using PID in the classroom are directly felt by both educators and students. The principal of SMAN 1 Indralaya, Pudyo Laksono, explained that the interactive board significantly helps students understand previously difficult-to-understand subject matter. For example, when the teacher visualizes the Kinetic Theory of Gases.

"Regarding the kinetic theory of gases, for example, Boyle's law, students no longer simply abstract the relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature. They can now visualize particle movement directly through a digital interactive board. When a pump simulation is used to compress particles inside a container, students can observe friction between particles, resulting in the appearance of an indicator that the container's lid is coming loose, concretely demonstrating the enormous pressure within the system," he explained.

To date, all schools in South Sumatra have reportedly received PID assistance. At the school level, this technology is being utilized collaboratively through learning communities. At SMAN 1 Indralaya, the school's quality team is conducting a pilot project and disseminating standard operating procedures (SOPs) to other teachers regarding device usage to ensure durability and maintenance.

Echoing this sentiment, the principal of SMPN 1 Lubuk Liat, Marion, stated that the use of PID is crucial for varying learning styles to keep up with technological developments. Students are said to have no difficulty adapting because the Android-based operating system is already familiar to them.

Similar support came from the principal of SDN 6 Pemulutan Barat, Desi Huswinda, who sees the PID as a crucial tool for creating a more dynamic and enjoyable classroom environment for students. She believes this facility represents a concrete step toward providing equal access to education for students in rural areas.

The internalization of the Digital Learning program through the use of PID affirms the Ministry of Education and Culture's policy direction in promoting more meaningful learning. Technology is positioned not as an end in itself, but rather as a means to strengthen conceptual understanding, foster critical thinking, and provide a learning process that is relevant to scientific developments and the needs of the times.

The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen), Abdul Mu'ti, emphasized that the Learning Digitalization program is not merely about providing infrastructure, but rather a strategy to reach geographically difficult areas.

"Digital learning has reached more than 288,000 educational institutions across Indonesia. We sincerely hope that the provision of these facilities and infrastructure will inspire us to provide quality educational services," he said.

He added that for hard-to-reach areas, the government is providing a comprehensive aid package. "We're not just sending PIDs, but we're also providing electricity and networking with Starlink, so the PIDs can be used to support distance learning," he added.*** (Writer: Uly/Editors: Denty A., Seno H.,/Photographer: Nurlaili)
